Jerry Wainwright, head men’s basketball coach at DePaul University, will deliver the keynote address at the College of Lake County Foundation’s 20th Keith Ryan Scholarship Fund and Sports Banquet on Thursday, Sept. 18 at Midlane Country Club in Wadsworth.
The banquet will recognize nine inductees into the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame and seven inductees into the Waukegan Sports Hall of Fame for 2008. Tickets are $50 per person or $360 for a table of eight and are available by calling the Foundation at (847) 543-2646.
The banquet is being held in memory of the late Keith Ryan, a popular sportscaster who spent nearly a quarter century promoting local sports in Lake County. Proceeds will be applied toward two $1,000 scholarships for CLC students – one for a student pursuing a career in print or broadcast communications and the other for a sophomore student athlete. The 2008 student scholarship winners are Lauren Liles (athletics) and Josh Shapcott (journalism).
Liles graduated from Grant High School in 2006, where she played basketball, softball and ran cross country. She's in her second year at CLC, where she plays both basketball and softball and is enrolled in the nursing program.
Shapcott, the journalism scholarship winner, is from Lake Villa. He is a 2004 graduate of Grayslake High School and is in his third year at CLC. Last year he was features editor of the CLC Chronicle and this year, he is editor in chief. He plans to continue his journalism career, possibly as a teacher.
New members of the Waukegan Sports Hall of Fame include Jim Dennor (baseball, basketball, football and golf), Emilie Dieck-Correa (golf), Bob Franz (golf and athletic administration), Jill Franz (golf), Mike Hewitt (swimming), Kim Hodge (golf) and Jacqui Melius (golf).
The new members of the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame include Darrel Bader (Warren High School – basketball), Bob Brown (Northern Officials Association), Bruce Campbell (Warren High School – basketball), Gerald Coleman (North Chicago High School – basketball), Mick Leafblad (Warren High School – baseball, basketball and football), Tom Loew (Stevenson High School – athletic training and wrestling), Susan Musselwhite (Mundelein High School – basketball and softball), Lindsey Prezell Shifley (Mundelein High School – softball) and Chris Trzyna (Libertyville High School – athletic administration and volleyball).
Since the scholarship banquet’s inception, more than $60,000 has been raised for journalism students and student-athletes. In addition, a total of 131 individuals have been inducted into the two halls of fame. For more information, call the CLC Foundation at (847) 543-2646.
