A world of professional, family-friendly entertainment is planned for the 13th season of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County.

The 2009-10 season, featuring 16 diverse professional entertainment events, kicked off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 with the Chicago favorite, Sones de México Ensemble, a Grammy®-nominated folk music ensemble.

“We begin our 13th season as the College of Lake County celebrates 40 years,”said Gwethalyn J. Bronner, executive director of the James Lumber Center. “This time of celebration will be acknowledged with a roster of top-notch performances in the 2009-2010 season, featuring some of the finest talent around. The breadth of artistic and cultural diversity is quite impressive, and it’s all available close to home with free parking as a bonus. For the best ticket value and priority seating for these excellent events, I recommend subscribing to our season as soon as possible.”

Tickets are available at the CLC Box Office in the James Lumber Center on the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Subscriptions are not available for online purchase, but patrons can learn more about the artists on the JLC Web site.

Tickets are discounted for CLC students ($16 for all events, with Mainstage seating in Level III), CLC staff, seniors 65 and over and members of the CLC Alumni Association. A $1 per ticket JLC facility fee is included in the prices listed here.

Sones de México Ensemble

This acclaimed Grammy®-nominated Mexican folk music ensemble from Chicago specializes in the various regional styles of son, recreating the atmosphere of a traditional fandango (dance fiesta). The ensemble has developed and popularized many original arrangements of Mexican traditional tunes. Some of its original work has experimented cross-culturally with symphonic, Irish, folk, County and Western, jazz and rock music, though never abandoning its roots in Mexican son. Audiences watch as the group works its way through a collection of over 25 folk string, percussion and wind instruments, bright four-part vocal arrangements and acrobatic dance demonstrations.

As the seeds of Africa spread throughout the “New World,” new music, new dances and an incredible diversity of African cultural expressions began to emerge. The Afro-Latin Project is an ensemble that performs music and dances influenced by the African presence in Latin America. Their repertoire consists of music from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela and presents sacred and secular pieces, always featuring the joyous and uplifting sounds that are a hallmark of African musical traditions.

For more than 23 years, the musical partnership of Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack, known as Switchback, has been entertaining audiences around the world with their unique American Roots music blended with Celtic Soul. Showcasing a repertoire ranging from sentimental ballads to blistering rockers, they deliver a powerful sound rivaling that of larger ensembles. While their musical paths have taken them to a variety of genres, Martin and Brian have never abandoned their traditional Celtic roots. To paraphrase Ringo Starr, “Switchback” is a dose of rock and roll, mixed with enough old country, a little blue grass and adult standards making the end product, Celtic!

Duke Ellington is one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music and is widely considered one of the twentieth century’s best known African American celebrities. As both a composer and a band leader, Ellington’s reputation has increased since his death, with thematic repackagings of his signature music often becoming best-sellers. Some well-known titles include; “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo” and “Satin Doll.” Under the direction of Barrie Lee Hall, Jr., the Duke Ellington Orchestra is a national treasure and continues to tour to enthusiastic audiences worldwide.

Sisters In Soul featuring Marcia Ball, Bettye LaVette & Maria Muldaur

This event features three great musical forces each with their own soulful style. Four-time Grammy® nominee, Marcia Ball, performs her blend of sounds from the Texas-Louisiana border with New Orleans R&B and piano boogie. Bettye LaVette, a 2008 Grammy® nominee is hailed as one of the greatest soul singers in American music history and recently performed a duet with Jon Bon Jovi at President Obama’s inauguration. Vocalist Maria Muldaur has roots in the folk revival of the early ‘60s where she performed in Greenwich Village with Bob Dylan, David Grisman and John Sebastian. This event is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Specializing in ‘40s-style big band swing, the John Burnett Orchestra will grab your attention with the sounds of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and many others. In addition to swing music, the orchestra performs current big band jazz charts and many vocal ballads such as those of Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. The orchestra contains five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums and at least one vocalist. It is rapidly establishing the reputation of being one of the best bands in Chicago, capturing the attention of both old and young.

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style and often daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has carved out a compelling musical path. Formed in 1994, they are unique in the chamber music world, but hold their own against the established mainstream ensembles favoring intellectual coherence over rhapsodic gusto. The ensemble was recently honored with a 2009 Grammy® Award for “Best Chamber Music Performance” in addition to being named “2009 Ensemble of the Year” by Musical America. They are considered one of the finest chamber music ensembles on the contemporary scene. This event is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and will be held in the Studio Theatre.
