CLC earns designation of 'Military Friendly School'

The College of Lake County was recently designated as a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs Magazine and will be featured in the “Guide to Military Friendly Schools.”

According to G.I. Jobs, this honor ranks CLC in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are working at assisting America’s veterans and military personnel in transitioning into college and reaching their educational goals. CLC is putting a renewed emphasis on serving veterans and will continue to enhance its policies, resources and outreach to retain veterans and those serving in the military, according to Karen Hlavin, assistant vice president for student development.

The college has established a military services committee that has been evaluating policies, procedures and resources for veterans, Hlavin said. Among the activities are promoting scholarships and financial aid opportunities, educating faculty and staff on how to assist veterans in their transition from soldier to student and offering programs to meet veterans’ specific needs in selecting a career path or degree option.

A veterans’ service officer from the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs is on campus once per week to assist veteran/military students and community members with military benefits. In addition, two veterans’ employment representatives from the Illinois Department of Employment Security are located at the Job Center of Lake County on the CLC Grayslake campus.

“CLC is ripe to serve the needs of our veterans, service members and their dependents. They can receive assistance in the areas of educational options and benefits, employment services, VA federal and state benefit information and more,” Hlavin said. “We’ve already seen an increase in fall semester applications from veterans.”
