Music lovers from around Lake County are invited to the College of Lake County during the 2009-10 academic year to enjoy the eclectic music performances presented by the CLC Music Department ensembles.
The CLC Music Department boasts five instrumental groups, including the award-winning Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band and a Jazz Combo. CLC’s choral program features three talented groups – the Choir of Lake County, the CLC Singers and the Gospel Choir.
Music department concerts are performed by CLC students and community members, with occasional professional guest artists. The director of bands is Dr. Michael Flack, and the director of choirs is Dr. Charles Clency. This fall, both men are celebrating five years of musical leadership, excellence and growth at the College of Lake County.
The following concerts and special events will be presented in the coming academic year in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the College of Lake County Grayslake campus, 19351 W. CLC “Jazz Night” Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
The award-winning CLC Monday Night and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles will perform a variety of big band jazz favorites. Dr. Michael Flack directs the Monday Night group and Dave Hibbard directs the Tuesday Night group. The Woodland Middle School jazz ensemble, directed by Carolyn Awe, and the Warren High School jazz ensemble, directed by Drew Russell, will open the concert. Fall Choral Concert: Sunday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
The CLC Singers, the Choir of Lake County and the Gospel Choir will perform audience favorites from Dr. Charles Clency’s five years of choral leadership. As a program finale, the CLC combined ensembles, now comprising a record participation of 125 singers, will perform the traditional “Amazing Grace” and Moses Hogan’s “Lift Every Voice For Freedom.” (Tickets: $5 general admission and $4 for CLC staff and students/Alumni Association members/Seniors 65+; includes $ JLC facility fee).
CLC Wind Ensemble: Sunday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.

The CLC Wind Ensemble will perform music from both the classical and modern wind band repertoire, featuring guest conductor Dr. Susan Taylor, director of bands at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. Gospel Choir Concert: Saturday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
This concert will highlight the best of exciting traditional and contemporary gospel music by CLC’s fast-growing Gospel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Charles Clency. Spring Choral Concert: Sunday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
This concert concludes the 2009-10 season of choral music. 33rd Annual Guest Artist Concert Featuring Trumpeter David Inmon, Bassist Nick Schneider and Drummer Bob Rummage: Sunday, May 9 at 4 p.m.
Lake Forest Symphony and Ravinia Festival Orchestra trumpeter David Inmon will perform with the CLC Wind Ensemble. Nick Schneider, a bassist in the Stan Kenton Orchestra and “Tonight Show” band, and Bob Rummage, drummer in the Woody Herman Orchestra, will perform with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. CLC Music Department facts
The Music Department’s reputation and audience continues to grow. During 2008-09, the CLC Music Department presented 12 concerts in the Mainstage Theatre that had a total attendance of 3,352. In addition, there were three non-ticketed concerts by the jazz combo and a chamber music group.
Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music Department ensembles or to take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. For information, contact the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division at (847) 543-2040. The CLC Music Department offers 59 courses leading to three different degrees: Associate in Music, Associate in Fine Arts in music performance and Associate in Fine Arts in music education.
