Small Business Development Center courses for October

From starting a business to hiring the best people, the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County is offering a wide range of educational programs this fall that are designed to help owners create, manage and grow their businesses.

Starting a Business in Illinois discusses corporations, limited liability corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships. It also covers taxes for sales, employees and income; regulations and licenses; insurance and bonding; labor laws and practices; feasibility and business plan elements. The class is offered at the Grayslake campus on Thursday, Oct. 8 or at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills on Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $25.

Smart Start to Your Small Business teaches you to manage your business and make time for your life. The class will be held at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills on Wednesday, Oct. 14 or Dec. 9 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cost is $35.

Business Survival for Existing Businesses helps you assess your current business strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to the strategic direction of your business. The class is offered at the Grayslake campus on Thursdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. from Oct. 15 through Nov. 5. The cost is $125.

How to Hire the Best teaches you to identify and assess the behaviors and skills in a job applicant that are important for a specific position within your business. The class will meet at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cost is $35.

Basic Recordkeeping for Small Business instructs you on how to prepare a balance sheet, income statement and projected cash flow statement. It also covers the use of financial ratios and comparative analysis to measure your business’s progress. The class meets at the Grayslake campus on Wednesday, Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cost is $75.

Quickbooks – Module 2 – Intermediate teaches you to analyze financial data to better understand your business to create and customize reports, track and pay sales tax and understand payroll functions. Classes will be held at the Grayslake campus on Thursday Oct. 22 from 6-10 p.m. or at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $99.

Creating a Sales Process in a Down Economy helps you create a sales process for your business and measure if you are getting the desired results. Classes will take place at the Grayslake campus on Thursday, Oct. 1 or at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $40.

Beginner’s Guide to the Export-Import Business will provide businesses or entrepreneurs a comprehensive overview of the basic practices and procedures involved in profitable exporting or importing. The class will be held at the Grayslake campus on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $89.
