Chopper Tech program helps you build, restore and repair motorcycles

Learn to build, restore and repair motorcycles in chopper tech courses being offered by the Workforce and Professional Development Institute at the College of Lake County. This technical program was created to meet the needs and interests of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Hands-on courses teach basic building techniques including frame mock-up, rake and train formula, fabrication techniques, electrical wiring and mechanical installation. Choose from one-, two- or three-day courses, which are held at Best Cycle, 3962 N. Lewis Ave., Beach Park, Ill. Chopper Tech is certified by the Illinois State Board of Education.

Custom Motorcycle Building is a three-day course designed to teach all the necessary skills to build a bike from the ground up and is designed for everyone from beginners to experienced mechanics. Classes run on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and are offered on the following dates: Oct. 3-5, Nov. 7-9 and Dec. 5–7.

Motorcycle Engines is a two-day program covering the complete motor and transmission disassembly and assembly, including cylinders, oil pumps, cams, push rods, valve terrain and carburetors. Tools are provided by the instructors. The course is offered from Sunday, Oct. 17 and Monday, Oct. 18.

Motorcycle Maintenance is a one-day course, taught in either metric measurement or English measurement, which explains maintenance, cleaning and proper tool usage. Learn time-saving techniques and how to complete common part replacements. The class is taught in metric measurement on Saturday, Nov. 14 and in English measurement on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Motorcycle Painting I teaches the basics of motorcycle painting, including the types of motorcycle paint, the equipment used to apply it and finishing techniques. You will prepare the metal, and mix and apply the paint. The class is offered on Sunday, Nov. 15.

Motorcycle Painting II takes your painting skills to the next level. Learn about custom paints and specialized equipment, painting effect, graphics and custom finishing. Previous painting experience or completion of Motorcycle Painting I is required. The class is offered on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22.
