Patricia Smith, a four-time National Poetry Slam individual champion, will read from her original poetry at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the College of Lake County in the C005 Auditorium. She will also give a poetry workshop from 2-3:30 p.m. in room A158. Both events are free and open to the public and will be held on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.
Smith’s recent book of poetry, “Blood Dazzler,” was a finalist for the National Book Award. She is a recent inductee into the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent. Her visit to CLC is part of both the college’s 40th anniversary and the Reading Series.
Smith is lauded by critics as “a testament to the power of words to change lives.” She is the author of five acclaimed poetry volumes. “Blood Dazzler” chronicles the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina and “Teahouse for the Almighty,” was a National Poetry Series selection and winner of the Hurston/Wright Award in Poetry. Among her many honors are a Pushcart Prize and the Carl Sandburg Award. She’s also a four-time national poetry slam champion; the most successful slammer in the competition’s history.
“Patricia is regarded as one of the few performance poets whose work translates effortlessly to the page. All this is to say that those attending the workshop and reading are in for an exciting, entertaining, moving and inspirational experience,” said English professor Larry Starzec.
Copies of some of Patricia Smith’s books will be available for purchase before and after the reading, and she will be available to sign books after the reading. If you’d like more information on Smith, visit the Patricia Smith Web Site.
