CLC Art Gallery announces 2013-14 exhibit schedule
Eight diverse art exhibitions of paintings, clay, sculpture, photography and more are planned for the 2013-14 season at the College of Lake County’s Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art. The exhibits feature work by well-known Chicago area artists as well as exhibits by members of the gallery and CLC students. All Friday night opening receptions and the exhibits are free and open to the public. The Gallery of Art will present the following exhibits in the 2013-14 academic year:
Where Land Meets Sky, July 8 to Aug. 16, 2013. Reception: Friday, July 12, 7-9 p.m. Painters Lars-Birger Sponberg and Paul Weber will feature Midwest landscapes in oil. Dennis Downes will exhibit watercolor landscapes and bronze sculptures of Native American trail marker trees.
FLEX: 3-D 12 Sculpture Group, Aug. 23 to Sept. 29, 2013. Reception: Friday, Aug. 23, 7-9 p.m. The exhibit features the sculptural works of eight Chicago area artists who explore the innovative use of wide variety of materials.
Recent Works: A Juried Competition, Oct. 4 to Nov. 10, 2013. Reception: Friday, October 4, 7-9 p.m. This 33rd annual competition includes all fine art media and is open to all artists who reside or work in Lake County. Approximately $2,000 will be presented in cash prizes and purchase awards for the college’s art collection.
Joel Sheesley: Paintings, Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, 2013. Reception: Friday, Nov. 15, 7-9 p.m. Sheesley paints realist images of reflective water puddles that metaphorically address a much larger world.
Members Exhibition, Jan. 17 to Feb. 23, 2014. Reception: Friday, January 17, 7-9 p.m. A diverse group show of all fine art media by over 100 Lake County, Illinois artists. Funds from artist memberships support the Robert T. Wright Gallery.
Embellished Surface: Image and Pattern on Clay, Feb. 28 to April 6, 2014. Reception: Friday, February 28, 7-9 p.m. A national, invitational exhibition featuring prominent artists selected for the various ways that they approach the form and surface. The clay forms might solely exist to display the rendered surface, or the surface may truly embellish the form.
The College of Lake County Student Art Competition, April 11 to May 16, 2014. Reception: Friday, April 11, 7-9 p.m. A juried exhibit by current art students at CLC featuring painting, drawing, computer graphics, photography, ceramics, jewelry, digital media and sculpture. Approximately $1,200 will be presented in cash prizes and purchase awards. Also, the Lake County Art League sponsors two $500 scholarships for art students.
Paula Palmer and Michael Brown: Digital Photography, May 23 to June 27, 2014. Reception: Friday, May 23, 7-9 p.m. Lake County artists Paula Palmer and Michael Brown use digital photography in very different manners. Palmer constructs compositions of disparate images that reference the four elements. Brown creates “lenticular” images.
The Artcetera Gallery will present The Cup II: 50 Artists 250 Variations, Feb. 28 to April 13, 2014. The exhibit is a diverse showcase of functional and non-functional cups, guest curated by Ben Bates.
Patrons should enter through the C Wing and proceed toward the Library/Learning Resource Center. During the summer, hours for the exhibit are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed on Saturday and Sunday. During the fall and spring semesters, hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Hours vary during college breaks.
The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the Grayslake campus is a project of the College of Lake County Foundation and is located at 19351 W. Washington St. Established by the CLC Foundation in 1981, the gallery is committed to displaying the works of Illinois artists and increasing the visibility of nationally known artists in Lake County.
