CLC professors to present Ronald Reagan and ‘Star Trek II’ programs at area libraries

Two CLC experts in the sociology of pop culture will present free presentations at area libraries. John and Maria Jose Tenuto will discuss “Ronald Reagan of Illinois” Feb. 6 in Vernon Hills and “Behind the Scenes: The Making of Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan” March 18 in Lake Villa.

John and Maria Jose Tenuto have given dozens of public presentations and media interviews on the sociology of the “Star Trek” film and television shows. They teach the sociology of popular culture, including the cultural significance and history of “Star Trek,” 1970s and 1980s nostalgia culture, the Amish and genealogy. The Tenutos write frequently for www.StarTrek.com and are nationally known experts on the TV and movie series. Their research has been featured on WGN News, Al Jazeera USA News, BBC Radio, Wired Magazine, Chicago Sun Times and USA Today. John was named one of “Star Trek’s” most influential fans by New York Magazine’s Vulture.com website.

Ronald Reagan statueLearn about President Ronald Reagan, the only U.S. President born in Illinois, from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at Aspen Drive Library (Cook Park Library), 701 Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. The Tenutos will discuss Reagan’s formative years growing up in Tampico, Monmouth, Galesburg, Dixon, and Chicago, which had a long-lasting effect on the 40th president. Register at www.cooklib.org/.

Scene from 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan'Celebrate the amazing actresses, actors and behind-the-scenes artists who worked on Nicholas Meyer’s 1982 film “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” from 1-2:30 p.m. March 18 at the Lake Villa Library, 1001 E. Grand Ave. This multi-media presentation features more than 100 rare photographs from the University of Iowa Libraries’ Nicholas Meyer collection. Discover little known facts about the making of the film and how it was produced despite limitations of budget, time and technology.
