Four highly acclaimed international films will be presented for free at 7 p.m. on Fridays by the CLC Center for International Education. The Fall Semester films are: “Under the Shadow” Sept. 8, “Blow-Up” Oct. 6, “Right Now, Wrong Then” Nov. 3 and “Elle” Dec. 1.

Movie poster for Nov. 3 filmNov. 3: Right Now, Wrong Then (South Korea, 2015). Visiting a small town to introduce a film screening, a celebrated director meets a young painter who is also a fan of his work. They strike up a gentle romance over the course of the day, and then the events of their courtship are presented again, with subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences. Admired at festivals for years, Hong Sang-Soo’s work has not been widely seen in the U.S. “That’s a real shame, because his latest effort, “Right Now, Wrong Then” … is not only his finest work to date but also the very best film released in 2016 so far,” wrote The AV Club.

Dec. 1: “Elle” (France/Germany 2016). A video game designer is brutally attacked and sexually assaulted in her home but refuses to report the incident to the police. Is she protecting herself from the indignity of an investigation, or is she playing a more deviant game of her own? Legendary provocateur Paul Verhoeven (“Robocop,” “Basic Instinct”) is at it again, directing Isabelle Huppert to an Oscar®-nominated performance. “Willing to push buttons, explore transgressive territory and take constant delight in venturing where the vast majority of filmmakers would fear to tread … will inspire debate for decades to come,” wrote Time Out.

The films will be shown at the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. in Room D100 (choir rehearsal room) until A011 (A Wing Auditorium) has completed repairs from the July flood. Films have subtitles when necessary, include adult content and are not suitable for children.
