Assessment at College of Lake County

CLC is committed to continuous improvement of student learning through regular and systematic assessment. This consists of clearly communicating our learning outcomes and expectations and monitoring student achievement of these learning outcomes at different levels—within courses, in departments, and across the institution. In support of this, assessment of student learning is led by faculty through the Assessment of Student Learning Committee.

Why We Do It

Why We Do It

  • Assessment results provide evidence of what students know and are able to do. We analyze this evidence to target resources and develop strategies to help students learn better.
  • The assessment process enables faculty to gain valuable knowledge about their students, which leads to more targeted and efficient teaching.
  • Each department uses assessment data to ensure students will meet the expectations of employers and transfer institutions when they leave CLC.

How We Do It

How We Do It

  1. Good assessment starts with clear learning outcomes. Every three to five years, the CLC Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are reviewed to ensure they are still relevant to employers and transfer institutions.
  2. Every semester, two of the eight CLOs are assessed. Faculty participate by choosing an assignment from their class and using a rubric to assess how well students achieved the particular CLO.
    • Fall 2016 - Oral Communication, Critical Thinking
    • Spring 2017 - Information Literacy, Technical Communication
    • Fall 2017 - Writing, Diversity and Social Justice
    • Spring 2018 - Quantitative Literacy, Reading
  3. Assessment results are aggregated across the institution and analyzed to determine how we can impact student learning. Resulting actions can include new resource materials for students, professional development experiences for faculty, curriculum changes, or expanded services to students.

Learning Outcomes and Rubrics

CLC Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and Rubrics

The goal of the CLC Learning Outcomes (PDF) is to prepare students for life-long learning, to maintain high academic standards, and to advance student success in future academic work and careers. The skills represented in the learning outcomes are developed by completing coursework across the curriculum and by participating in co-curricular activities.

Co-Curricular Learning Outcomes

Co-Curricular Learning Outcomes

Learning occurs both in and outside the classroom. For co-curricular initiatives at CLC, we identify learning outcomes and align them to our CLOs. This forms an intentional connection to reinforce learning in the classroom with learning through campus experiences.
