Math Courses for Students in Liberal Arts

The CLC Mathematics Department now offers two different General Education Math courses. Each is designed for students in the liberal and performing arts, whose program does not require a specific math course. Each course will also satisfy the mathematics requirement for the A.A. degree.

MTH 141 – Quantitative Literacy

This course covers some practical math that each of us is likely to encounter as informed citizens of the modern world.

  • Logic: Learn how to develop and analyze logical statements and arguments.
  • Financial Mathematics: Learn the basics of compound interest, annuities and retirement planning, mortgages and other consumer loans, effects of inflation.
  • Modeling: Learn how researchers analyze real data to describe relationships between various real-world quantities. Examples include population models, regression and correlation.
  • Statistics: Learn the basics of descriptive statistics and data analysis as well as the design of statistical studies.

MTH 140 – Contemporary Mathematics

This course introduces students to some interesting topics in modern mathematics. Topics will be chosen from the following:

  • Logic and Sets: Learn how to develop and analyze logical statements and arguments; also paradoxes and fallacies.
  • Discrete Mathematics: Learn how mathematics is used for designing communication and transportation networks, methods for solving complex scheduling problems, how to analyze computer algorithms.
  • Modern Geometry: Learn about fractal, projective and non-Euclidean geometry, and how these are used in the sciences and the arts.
  • Symmetry and Form: Learn about growth patterns in nature, and the role of symmetry and similarity in the arts.
  • Probability: Basics of probability: Theoretical vs. Empirical probability, conditional probability and independence, odds, expected value and binomial distributions.
  • Game Theory: Learn about zero-sum games, equilibria, and applications to politics and economics.
