The lab was started in Fall 2016, arising from a need for a space for CLC students in the Engineering Transfer program to build project prototypes in their classes. In May 2017, as a result of a generous donation from Baxter International Inc., the lab became the "Baxter Innovation Lab". The lab is modeled on MIT's Fab Foundation charter, and is a member of the United States Fab Lab Network. The lab serves CLC students, community members and businesses, and K-12 students and their teachers. We are a public resource, and welcome participation, new users, and suggestions for improvement.

The Baxter Innovation Lab is a non-profit, design and fabrication instructional workshop. The lab is located at the College of Lake County in Grayslake Illinois. The lab is a member of the United States Fab Lab Network (USFLN) and adheres to the Fab Foundation charter from MIT. Users include CLC students, faculty, and staff, Lake County K-12 students and their teachers, Lake County community members and Lake County business and industry. The lab will provide the space and equipment for individuals and groups to design and fabricate prototypes (not production) with a variety of software, tools and equipment. The primary goal is to help users learn and foster practical design skills through hands-on fabrication, testing and collaboration. The Fab Lab will have equipment for 2D and 3D CAD design, woodworking, metalworking, plastic working, electronics, programming and other skill sets required by the modern STEM workforce.
