Character Matters

Black Diamond Program
An award initiative sponsored by the Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan, this is an annual awards reception honors the achievements of graduating high school seniors. For information, contact JoHaan Cotton at (847) 543-2112.
Educational Talent Search
Funded by the United States Department of Education, this program encourages at risk junior and senior high school student in Waukegan, North Chicago, Zion and round Lake to complete high school and enroll in post-secondary educational programs. Services include tutoring, career exploration and assessment, personal advising and exposure to college environments. For more information, call (847) 543-2049.
Hook a Kid on Golf
Offered through CLC’s Student Activities Department, this activity is part of a national program that provides golfing equipment and lessons for disadvantaged children, teaching both the sport of golf and the values of sportsmanship, fairness and dedication. I Have a Dream
Funded in part by the CLC Foundation, this program provides services for 20-25 grade school students in the city of North Chicago. It encourages at-rish students to stay in school by providing tutoring, mentoring and other services and activities. Students who complete the program will receive “last dollar” scholarship to the college of their choice. For information, contact William Devore at (847) 543-2640.
Latino Student Success Initiative
Funded by the Illinois Higher Education Cooperation Act, this program focuses on the unique needs of Latino middle and high school students in their quest for academic achievement—while engaging them in the process toward high school completion and college/university enrollment. Parent and student focus groups learn about educational institutions, career planning, financial aid options, along with tutoring and study skill sessions and character building. Saturday Youth Institute
Intended for youth 11 to 14 years of age from throughout Lake County, this program is offered through CLC’s Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan. The program provides a wide range of after-school activities, including self-esteen and goal-setting classes and leadership training, along with classes in such practical skills as managing money and using computers.
