CDIS 68 Origins of the First Amendment: Freedom of Expression

Directly in the middle of the uneasy intersection between national freedom and national security, the First Amendment guarantees free speech, a free press, and the freedom to assemble. You will engage in a nonpartisan examination of the history of these rights, from the days of the English radicals and the French Enlightenment through the early years of the American republic as our nation struggled to decide if freedom of expression was simply too costly.
