Navigation for English/Journalism:

The College of Lake County English Department offers courses in composition, poetry, creative writing, creative non-fiction, western and non-western literature, and journalism. The ability to write well is essential for success in academic communities or in the workplace, and the courses in this department are designed to identify your writing level and help you to develop into a proficient writer. Developmental courses are available for native English speakers who might not be quite at grade level in their writing. Other courses assist the competent writer in the development of essays, reports, and research papers which will be required in most areas of study (yes, including math!)College bound students for whom English is not their native language are advised to consider English Language Instruction (ELI) courses. These classes are geared toward improving academic reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar skills. More advanced students may wish to study literature, journalism, or the process of teaching the reading and writing of English to non-native speakers. Journalism students may wish to write for the student newspaper the CLC Chronicle. Teachers may wish to pursue a certificate for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).
