Academic advising is a systematic and multidimensional process designed to help students reach their academic and career goals. Students may contact the Counseling, Advising, and Transfer Center to make arrangements to see an advising professional: (847) 543-2060, C110 (Grayslake Campus).
Advising Responsibilities of Advisors
Academic Advisors, Faculty and Counselors all provide academic advising to students according to students' needs, students' credit hours and the advising professionals' expertise. All advising professionals are responsible for giving students accurate information, treating them with respect, educating them about the advising process and encouraging them to be active participants in advising. They also help students reach their goals and make appropriate referrals when necessary.
Advising Responsibilities of Students
Students are responsible for contacting an Academic Advisor when they need help with academic planning. It is best to do this as early as possible before registration. They are responsible for being active participants in the advising process by asking questions, taking notes, reading information in the college catalog and class schedule, considering or following through on advisors' recommendations, learning the graduation and other requirements for their programs of study, and learning how to schedule and register for classes, among other things. Students who are unclear about their educational or career goals should seek assistance from a CLC counselor to develop those goals.
Prospective Students
-
Recent High School Graduates
All new students who are recent high school graduates must attend a New Student Orientation Advisement session during which they will receive academic advising. After advising, the Academic Advisors will remove the advising hold to allow registration. New full-time students are encouraged to attend as well. Learn how to get started and to register for a New Student Orientation Advisement Session.
-
Returning Adults/Professionals
The Advisement Information Meeting (AIM) is designed for students who are planning to attend part-time, are returning adults, or just plan to take a few college courses and need to develop educational goals. Attendance at AIM is recommended before seeing an Academic Advisor. Learn how to get started. View more information and dates and times AIM sessions are available.
-
Veterans
Veterans should consult with the Veterans Representative in the CLC Financial Aid Office. The representative will inform you about veterans' benefits, eligibility, forms, mandatory academic advising and other information related to using benefits while attending CLC.

Generally, re-admitted CLC students (reactivated after an absence of 2 years or more), and returning CLC students, will meet with an Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Office.
Continuing Students with less than 30 credits
Generally, continuing students with less than 30 credit hours who have chosen a program of study (major) will meet with an Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Office. However, any student who would like to learn more about an academic program and related career fields, may consult with a faculty member in that program.
Continuing Students with 30 or more credits
Transfer Students: Continuing students who plan to transfer and have 30 or more credits will typically meet with a counselor. However, any student who would like to learn more about an academic program and related career fields, may consult with a faculty member in that program.
Associate in Applied Science and Certificates Students: All CLC students who are pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Degree or Certificate and have 30 or more credit hours, including enrolled hours, should meet with a faculty advisor in their program. Undecided Continuing Students
Continuing students who have not chosen a program of study (major) will typically meet with a counselor.
Mandatory Advising
The following students must meet with an appropriate advising professional (Academic Advisor, Counselor, Faculty Advisor) before registering for classes:
- Recent high school graduates entering CLC for the first time meet with an Academic Advisor during the New Student Orientation Advisement Session. After advising, the Academic Advisors will remove the advising hold to allow registration. Research has shown that on the average younger students have lower grade-point averages than older students and enroll in more credit hours. Receiving academic advising upon entering college helps students get started on the right path.
- Degree or certificate seeking students prior to registering for their 19th and 41st college credit hours. Academic advising, required upon entering CLC, then at the 19th hour and again at the 41st hour is designed to insure that students start and stay on the right path to reach their goals. Advising professionals will explain degree requirements and/or complete a graduation or degree progress checklist with the student, make recommendations and remove the advising hold to allow registration for classes.
- Continuing students who need to establish language proficiency or basic algebra readiness should see a counselor.
Other students may also benefit from talking with an Academic Advisor, counselor or faculty member prior to registering for classes. Students will be referred to the appropriate office based on number of credits earned/enrolled and students' needs.
