Counselors provide career and personal counseling services for all students and academic advising for designated student populations.

Counselors are available at all three campuses:

  • Grayslake: C110, (847) 543-2060
  • Lakeshore: N211, (847) 543-2186
  • Southlake: R202, (847) 543-6501

An alphabetical list of the counseling services is listed below:

  • Career Counseling—Through counseling, assessment and career information, counselors help students set and realize career-related goals. Methods may include individual or group counseling as well as credit or non-credit classes. See PDS 122 in the course section of the college's catalog.
  • Crisis Intervention and Referrals—Counselors are available as a resource to all CLC community members to provide help to students who may be in crisis. Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor to discuss their situation and counselors will listen and refer them if on-going personal counseling or therapy is needed. Faculty, staff and friends of students are also encouraged to refer or walk students who might be in crisis to the counseling center.
  • Educational Development—Counselors can assist students who want to become more successful in school, need to meet academic proficiencies and/or want to return to good academic standing. Students work with a counselor to develop an academic plan, select appropriate classes and learn strategies for success in school through individual conferences, workshops and classes in which they can learn study skills, methods for managing time, test-taking techniques, and other strategies for becoming a better student. The counseling staff also assists students whose reading, writing, or mathematics skills are below college level. See PDS 120 in the course section of the college's catalog.
  • Major (Selecting a)—Counselors work with undecided students to help them select a program and curriculum which meets their life and career goals.
  • Personal Development—Counselors assist with personal growth and life planning, and/or with personal problems that interfere with progress in school by providing individual or group sessions or referrals to appropriate community agencies. See PDS 121 and PDS 123 in the course section of the college's catalog.
  • Transfer Counseling and Planning—Counselors typically help students choose a major that fits their career and life goals, make decisions about the type of college or university they want to attend, and address personal or social issues and concerns connected with transferring.
  • Assessment—A counselor can help students gain more knowledge about themselves, their learning styles and how they fit into the world of work through the use of career, learning styles inventories and other assessments and exercises.
