Math Modules

The mathematics module is offered as an alternative to a classroom setting for MTH 101. The module is designed to allow a student to proceed at a variable pace. Because this course does not have formal class sessions, you must work on the material at home as well as in the Math Center if you expect to successfully complete the module.

There are a total of four modules which must be completed in order to earn credit for the class. However, you can enroll in only one module at a time. If you successfully complete the module before the end of the term and you desire to enroll in the next module, the Math Center staff will assist you with enrollment.

As a condition of enrollment, we expect you to come to the Math Center twice each week for a minimum of one hour each time. If you cannot make this commitment, you should probably withdraw and enroll in the classroom format. There is nothing magic about the modules. If you do not spend enough time on them, you will do poorly and we don't want that to happen. In addition, if you do not meet the attendance standard, you can be withdrawn by instructor.

You indicate your attendance by signing in on the sheet on the table outside the Math and Science Center office. During the time you are here you may study at one of the tables located throughout the center. Tutors will be available to help you.

There is a test at the end of each chapter. You must pass the test with a score of at least 70%. You are allowed a maximum of two retests on a chapter in order to get a passing score. If you get less than 70% on the first retest, you must meet with a mathematics instructor who will prescribe some corrective action before you can attempt the second retest. Your grade in the module will be determined by the mean (average) of the passing chapter test scores.

The possible grades in a module are A, B, C, F, W, or I. A grade of D is not possible.

You must complete the module in the semester of enrollment. If you do not complete it, you will receive a grade of F unless an incomplete is appropriate. An incomplete (I) is given at the discretion of the instructor and only if you have regular attendance and have begun testing.

If you have any questions, please contact the Math Center.
