Tutoring
One-on-one tutoring is free and available to all CLC students. You may bring in a writing or speech assignment from any class; if you're getting ready to transfer, you may also have someone look at your college application essay. Our tutors will not take over your paper, but will provide feedback to help you make improvements.
Common questions about tutoring:
Q: What can the tutor help me on?
A: Come in at any stage of your writing process. For example, you may
find it useful to come for help getting started with an assignment, for ideas on how to further
expand/develop your essay, or for help improving your grammar.
Q: Who uses the Center?
A: Because all writers need readers, students of all ability levels use the Center.
Q: Do I need an appointment?
A: No. You may drop in any time during our posted Writing Center Home. However, if you meet a tutor
you especially like working with, you may want to schedule an appointment so you know
you'll get that tutor again. During our busy times, an appointment will also "save you
a spot," so you won't have to wait for an available tutor. To schedule an appointment at main campus, call
(847) 543-2452. For an appointment at Lakeshore, call (847) 543-2000 Ext. 6247
Q: What if I'm not enrolled at CLC?
A: Lake County residents who are not enrolled at CLC may receive limited
(no more than two half-hour sessions per semester) drop-in tutoring if no CLC students are waiting. However, you
must be enrolled as a student at CLC in order to make an appointment.
Q: What do students who have used the Writing Center say about it?
A: Here are some comments from students:
"My tutor helped me see things that I was unable to see, such as simple spelling
corrections or redundancy."
"She was very helpful and didn't make me feel stupid."
"My conference gave me some guidance on how to construct my paper."
"It is wonderful to know I can get help when I need it."
Other Services
ESL Conversation Circles provide a casual atmosphere for English as a Second Language students to practice speaking in and listening to English. During the fall and spring semesters, weekly hour-long circles are offered at the Lakeshore campus. They are free and designed for intermediate and advanced ESL students. Contact the Writing Center for details.
The Writing Center also houses a one-credit module called English 104, Individualized Topics in Writing and Reading. Working one-on-one with a Writing Center tutor, module students choose several writing and/or reading issues to concentrate on, work through activities and exercises related to these issues, and write/revise three to five writing assignments based on their areas of concern.
For English faculty, the Center provides in-class tutors to help during workshop class periods. For all faculty, we offer Writing Center orientations (5-10 minute introductions to our services) and class presentations covering writing-related topics. Call the Writing Center to make arrangements.
