The following is a sample of some recent grant awards at the College of Lake County.

Undergrad International Studies & Foreign Language Program (Title VI-A)

Kudos to Li-hua Yu, Instructor Sociology!!

The College of Lake County has been awarded a highly competitive grant from the United States Department of Education in the amount of $60,853. Grant monies will be used to enhance and expand Chinese language instruction and courses; provide new and revised courses in East Asian Studies courses; and offer a multifaceted study abroad and faculty exchange program conducted in partnership with Xian International Studies University (XISU) in Xian, People’s Republic of China. The grant period is from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. CLC was one of only four community colleges in the nation to receive this grant!

Illinois Cooperative Workstudy Grant

Congratulations to Sylvia Pullins, Director of Career and Placement Services!!

The College of Lake County has been awarded a grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education in the amount of $24,000. Grant monies will continue to provide financial assistance to students in support of cooperative work-study programs with area businesses and corporations. The project will assist students academically and financially by reducing their reliance on loans, enhancing public-private partnerships, and encouraging students to seek permanent employment in Illinois.

Police Traffic Services Training Grants

Congratulations to Carole Ewing, Director of Community Education!!

The College of Lake County has been awarded five grants from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board totaling $18,950.00. Grant monies will be used to reimburse the cost of providing training to Lake County public safety officials for the following activities:

Emergency Medical Dispatch Training $7,350.00
Standardized Field Sobriety Test Training $3,675.00
Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Training $3,675.00
Radar Operator Training $2,125.00
Lidar (Laser) Operator Training $2,125.00
TOTAL $18,950.00

TRIO: Talent Search

Kudos to Dana Chism, Director of Talent Search!!

The College of Lake County was awarded a U.S. Department of Education TRIO: Talent Search grant in the amount of $292,890. This grant will be used to continue to identify 800+ disadvantaged youth with potential to successfully complete postsecondary education and provided tutoring, mentoring, and personal development services. Talent Search also assisted the students in college enrollment by providing admission and student financial aid information. Students from Round Lake, Zion-Benton, Waukegan, and North Chicago high schools were served by the program.

Higher Education Cooperation Act (HECA) Grant

Congratulations to Stephanie DeCicco, Assistant Vice President for University Transfer!!

The College of Lake County has been awarded a grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s HECA grant program in the amount of $46,400. Grant monies were used to implement a Lake County Latino Student Success Initiative for 150 ninth through twelfth grade students attending Waukegan High School, Round Lake High School, Mundelein High School, Grant Community High School, and Zion-Benton Township High School. The program provides participants with bilingual and/or bicultural assistance to succeed in high school and matriculate into postsecondary education. Additionally, sessions would be conducted that focus on time management, study skills, goal setting, and career exploration. The following universities also are participating in this initiative: University Center of Lake County, DePaul University, Northern Illinois University and Northeastern Illinois University.

CLC was the only community college in the state funded under this program!

National Science Foundation under the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Grant

Kudos to Rob Twardock, Instructor Civil Engineering!!

The College of Lake County has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation under the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Grant program in the amount of $499,194 over the life of the five-year project. Grant monies will be used to provide up to 60 scholarships annually to academically talented and financially needy students who enroll full-time at CLC as Engineering, Computer Science and pre-Engineering majors. The grant will provide scholarships up to $4,000 and academic and support services to increase enrollment and retention in these majors by minority, female, and disabled students. The project also will increase the transfer rates of scholarship recipients to four-year baccalaureate institutions. The grant period is from October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2011.
