About Our Grant
CLC was awarded a highly competitive two-year Title VIA grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create a program in East Asian Studies with a core emphasis on Chinese language, culture and society.
The project builds on existing resources and faculty expertise, including the rich resources of the Chicago area, to turn what is now a scattered overview of a critically important area of the world into a more comprehensive and coordinated program. The project has three major objectives:
- Creating a range of new courses in East Asian societies and cultures, and facilitating the inclusion of modules and topics from this area of the world in existing course offerings.
- Increasing faculty knowledge and skills in East Asian societies and cultures through professional development opportunities.
- Establishing a multifaceted study abroad and faculty exchange program with Xi’an International University (XAIU) in Xi’an China.
Leading the project is Dr. Li-hua Yu, CL faculty member (Social Sciences Division).
