About the Program

Julie Rose-Skifano, medical assisting instructor, introduces the program. "Medical Assisting is a good career option for students because it is one of the fastest growing professions through the year 2014. Here, specifically in Lake County, it's in very high demand."

She explains the flexible schedule options. "The Medical Assisting program at the College of Lake County is unique because we offer part-time and full-time options for students, and we have flexible scheduling as well. The Medical Assisting program at CLC is based at the Lakeshore campus in Waukegan. All the clinical classes are taught here. Some of the other classes are taught at Grayslake or Lakeshore, giving the students quite a few options."

"All of our clinical sites are doctor's offices in the area. Most of them are internal medicine." Julie continues, "We are trained to take care of ambulatory patients, or patients that can walk in and out of a facility. Nurse or nursing assistants are trained to work in hospitals where the patient is bed-ridden."

Student Experience

Jane Kelley, medical assisting student, shares her thoughts on faculty. "The faculty have worked in the medical assisting arena, are very experienced, and can give us the hands-on everyday knowledge that we know we are going to require when we get out there to look for a job."

Julie Rose-Skifano, describes successful students in the Medical Assisting program. "Successful students truly devote a great deal of time to studying the materials, to picking up on things that are not necessarily in the book, people skills. Those who can work well with people and really have a desire to help people improve their health."

Jane Kelley adds, "This job is about helping people, about giving comfort to people, and giving back to humanity."

Certification

Julie Rose-Skifano concludes, "Our program offers a medical assisting certificate or a degree. With a degree they could transfer on to a four-year college and either pursues medical assisting further or get into management and those possibilities. Once our students finish the program, they are prepared to sit for the national boards, and once they receive that certification, they will get paid more they can work in all 50 states."
