Green Careers

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics defines “green jobs” as those that are focused on directly improving the environment or conserving natural resources as well as jobs that help make a business’s practices more environmentally friendly.  Calculating the size of the green economy has proved complex because of a lack of standard definitions. However, in 2011, the BLS estimated that the green economy accounted for 3.4 million jobs.

CLC offers many degree and certificate options that can prepare you for jobs in the emerging green economy.

The Virtual Career Network Green Economy website has information on sustainability careers and the education needed for them. The website is a project of IGEN Career Pathways TAACCCT grant that was awarded to CLC and 16 other community colleges in Illinois. It provides information on what green career programs are available at CLC. Additional features of the site include searching for careers based on current and anticipated education levels. VCN Green also has a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) tool that visitors can use to see if their previous military/education/work experience could be worth college credit.
