About the Workshop
This one-day workshop will examine new business and employment opportunities springing up in Lake County and nationally connected with the growing movement toward deconstruction and reuse of building materials. The presenters will explain how this emerging "green" technology is influencing the design, construction and remodeling of residential and public housing, schools, hospitals, public facilities and commercial and industrial real estate and share their real-world experience in the field. The session will also engage participants in determining the role local government, nonprofits, community institutions and real estate and building professionals can play in creating a positive business climate for deconstruction and building material reuse in Lake County. Lunch will be provided.

Presenters
Deborah R. Popely, Associate Director
Delta Institute
Deborah Popely heads up the Delta Training Institute, which provides educational opportunities in the area of sustainable business and technology. For the past year, she has helped lead the development and presentation of Delta's green economy education and technical assistance program. She will provide a brief overview of the green economy - what it is, where it's going, and the role of waste-related businesses in that growth, and she will facilitate a discussion about how communities and businesses in Lake County can take advantage of this rapidly emerging opportunity.
Elise Zelechowski, Deputy Executive Director
Delta Institute
Among other efforts, Ms. Zelechowski leads Delta Institute's waste-related initiatives and has been a catalyst for the development of the building deconstruction and reuse industry at the local, regional and national levels. In 2007, she launched the ReBuilding Exchange (RX), the Chicago's first nonprofit building material reuse center. More recently, she launched Chicago's first deconstruction job training program. She will share her perspective on the potential environmental, economic and community impact of the deconstruction and reuse movement as well as her understanding of other up-and-coming waste-related industries likely to emerge in Lake County and elsewhere in the region.
Ken Ortiz, Midwest Regional Manager
The ReUse People of America
Mr. Ortiz has over twenty five years experience in real estate management and development including extensive experience renovating, restoring and creating adaptive reuse solutions for single family homes and commercial buildings in Chicago and Chicago's North Shore area. He will provide an in-the-trenches view of deconstruction and reuse based on his experience partnering with the ReBuilding exchange to develop the industry in the Chicago region with The ReUse People of America.
Tim Ammons, Manager
Habitat ReStore Lake County
Mr. Ammons manages the Habitat Restore Lake County based in Waukegan, one of a large national network of discount and reused buildingand household materials operated by the charity. Mr. Ammons will share his experience as part of the Habitat for Humanity organization and talk about what it takes to operate and build a successful donation-based retail business serving this market in Lake County.
Dave Hampton, Architect, LEED AP, Principal
Hampton Avery Architects
Dave Hamption is a sustainable architect who plans and implements high-performance buildings, both new and retrofit throughout the world. He also helped found Urban Habitat Chicago (UHC), an Illinois nonprofit which encourages sustainable concepts and practices in urban environments. His advocacy of deconstruction and reuse of building materials has resulted in over 30 residential and commercial deconstructions - diverting over 700 tons of material from the landfill - and helped lead to the development of the Delta Institute's ReBuilding Exchange (RX), where he serves on the Advisory Board and assists with education programs for design professionals and students. Dave will discuss the impact deconstruction and reuse is having on the design and building community.
