Art
MathArt (Gr. 5-8)
Math and art collide in this fun hands-on course designed to guide you in creating exciting art pieces by combining basic geometry concepts and simple art skills. Using only a ruler and pencil create three-dimensional landscapes that fool the eye. Amaze your family and friends while you design and build sculptures from paper and glue. You don't have to be a math whiz to enjoy this class. Just allow your creativity and mathematical thinking to work together. A supply list will be provided before the class.

Cartooning (Gr. 1-4)
By combining geometric shapes anyone can draw cartoons. Start with a stick figure and add shapes and details to bring your character to life. You'll draw a new character each week and have the option to display your artwork on the instructor's website. Please bring a $5 supply fee payable to the instructor at the first class.

Filmmaking
Digital Filmmaking (Gr. 6-12)
Learn visual storytelling through hands-on video creation. Using Final Cut Pro software, you'll learn how to produce, write, tape and edit videos. You'll work in teams throughout the workshop and leave with a DVD of the videos you created. Bring a camcorder, tripod and flash drive, or make arrangements in advance to borrow video equipment. Equipment available for sharing is limited. The class will be held in a computer lab.

Star Wars Adventure (Gr. 1-5)
The first part of the week, you'll explore the story line, characters and spaceships and connect the story to classical mythology and modern fairy tales. Dress up like your favorite character, create your own fictional character, use art to recreate Star Wars elements and get your starship pilot license! Then you'll move on to the science and technology that made Star Wars possible and explore the vehicles and tools used by the characters. Could a lightsaber really exist? Is it possible to drive a landspeeder across the desert and to hover above the sand? You'll also discover how George Lucas and his team created the movie sets and special effects. Please bring a $10 supply fee payable to the instructor at the first class.

Stop Action Animation with LEGO® (Gr. 2-6)
Take your love of LEGO® a step further and learn digital storytelling through stop motion animation! Working in a group of other creative filmmakers you will write, direct, film and produce your very own stop action video. You will create a storyboard, build sets and characters with popular LEGO® sets, film scenes, import photos, add voice-overs and background music and, time permitting, create green screen background. Enjoy the screening of your classmates’ films, engage in special activities and take home a mini LEGO® set and a DVD copy of your first film! Bring your own digital camera to class.

Visual Fractions (Gr. 4-8)
The common struggle with fractions occurs because sometimes you need to find a common denominator and sometimes you don't. And then there's the dilemma of renaming fractions and mixed numbers. A patient instructor will guide students through interactive lessons to identify patterns, find solutions, and apply those solutions to the next fraction challenge. Visually students will make the transition to "common denominator dominators."

Secrets of Algebra Revealed! Most kids who struggle with algebra silently ask the same question, "Where do these formulas come from?" Learn where they come! A patient instructor using interactive lessons will work through the steps with you to find solutions, identify patterns, construct the formulas yourself and then apply them to additional problems. Put yourself in the equation and become an "Algebra Slayer."

Web Design (Gr. 6-9)
You will learn how to create a Web site using the software that the pros use. HTML coding, design, Adobe Dreamweaver software and copyright regulations will be covered. You'll leave the class with a Web site on a topic of your choice. To accomplish this, you will need to bring original images or photos in digital format. Images and photos must be taken, created or purchased by you or your parents. A flash drive is required. The class will be held in a computer lab.

Beginning Group Guitar (Gr. 5-12)
If you've dabbled in playing the guitar, now is your chance to learn the correct way to play. Designed for someone with little or no experience, the class teaches you the correct technique and how to play basic chords, read music and tune your guitar. Xplore! Boating Safety (Ages 12-17)
Presented as a public service by the Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the U.S. Power Squadrons. Sessions include the following topics: boating on inland lakes and waterways (terminology, equipment, regulations, boat handling and emergency conditions); boating on open water, such as Lake Michigan (nautical charts, magnetic compass, plotting and basic piloting); reviews; and an exam. Students completing the first six sessions and passing the exam earn an Illinois boating safety education card. If your child struggles with reading, you want to help but may not know where to start. This class will give you the skills to help your child with decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Understand the components of good reading instruction so you can better evaluate the instruction your child is receiving in school. Hear about the most recent research on reading theory, learn the most effective methods for teaching reading, and practice reading strategies you can implement with your child at home. It's not too late to prepare for the first fall ACT test date! Learn secrets to finishing ACT tests more quickly and scoring higher in this concentrated three week class that meets twice a week. Lean how to avoid common mistakes and pick the best answer when taking the reading, English, math and science sections of the ACT. Experienced teachers will present fun, interactive lessons from the Barron's ACT 16th Edition textbook. The class does not offer the actual ACT exam but will prepare you for the September 8 and October 27 test dates in your area. Bring your textbook to the first class.
