GI Bill

Various government regulations require our office to follow a STRICT set of procedures. To ensure your educational benefits claim is processed in our office in a timely manner, please submit all requested information at the same time.

How to Apply

To receive the GI BILL, all applicants must complete and return the following to the Veterans Affairs Regional Processing Office:

  • Application for VA Education Benefits Form 22-xxxx.
    • 22-1990 - Chapters 30, 33, 1606, 1607 or 32
    • 22-5490 - Chapter 35 (Dependent Benefits)
    • 28-1900 – Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation)
    • Complete our Veteran Benefit Information Form for each term you wish to use your benefit.
    • If you are a veteran, copies of the DD-214's Member 4 Copy must accompany your application.
      If you have multiple enlistments, submit a Member 4 copy of your DD-214 for each enlistment. To obtain a copy of your DD-214 (Member 4 copy) you can either log onto the National Archives Database or complete and submit an SF-180 form available in the Financial Aid Office.

      Current active duty personnel only: The Educational Service Center on base will complete a DD-295 form or a Smart Transcript.

Educational claims are processed through the Department of Veterans Affairs Office in St. Louis, Missouri. The Department of Veterans Affairs will notify you in writing in approximately 4-6 weeks, stating your benefit entitlement. You should begin to receive your GI Bill benefits approximately 8-10 weeks after you submit your enrollment to the Veterans Representative.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Recipients of all Chapters must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a cumulative course completion rate (CCR) of 67% or higher. The cumulative standards look at every class you have taken at the College of Lake County, regardless of whether you were receiving benefits during that time period.

Policies and Procedures

  • Provide official military and academic transcripts indicating prior credit by having them sent directly to the Office of Registrar and Records. Visit Transfer Credit for Military Education for more information on how to obtain your military transcripts. Failure to provide this information may result in an overpayment or termination of benefits.
  • Report any schedule changes (add/drops/withdrawls) during the semester to the CLC Veterans Office. Benefit Entitlement is approved only for course required to complete your degree objective.
  • Report any change in mailing address using the Change of Personal Information Form (PDF) to the Office of Registrar and Records and to the CLC Veterans Office.
  • Report change of your program of study to the CLC Veterans Office in writing. Note: A change of degree objective is subject to approval by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Acquire academic counselor approval prior to enrollment in developmental coursework.

How is my payment amount calculated?

Benefits are paid from the first scheduled date of classes for the term in which the student is enrolled. If you are enrolled in a class that starts AFTER the first week or the term, or ends BEFORE the last week of the term, your ACTUAL enrollment dates are reported to the VA. This will affect how your GI Bill is calculated.

For example, a student enrolled in 12 hours for the fall semester may have a 3 credit hour course that does not begin until midterm. This student will receive benefits at the 3/4 time rate until that late-starting class begins. After that class begins, they will be paid at the full time rate.

How do I certify my enrollment for my GI Bill benefits?

NOTE: Monthly certification is NOT required under Chapter 33.

Almost everyone receiving MGIB-Active Duty (Chapter 30), REAP (Chapter 1607) or MGIB-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606), must verify their enrollment* each month to receive payment for that month. Your enrollment can be verified starting on the last calendar day of the month by using our Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) or by calling our toll free Interactive Voice Response (IVR) telephone line at 1-877-823-2378.

*Please note that "verifying" and "certifying" your enrollment are two different procedures:

  • "Certification" is done by a school or training official and lets the VA know how many hours or credits you will be enrolled in so we can determine your payment rate.
  • "Verification" is done by you at the end of each month and lets VA know that your enrollment information has not changed.

The CLC Registrar and Records Office must receive sealed transcripts from any other college and/or military training. Visit Transfer Credit for Military Education for more information on how to obtain your military transcripts.

What does the program pay for and where does the money get sent?
Post 9/11 - Chapter 33 GI Bill

Tuition & Fees - paid directly to the school - not to exceed the maximum in-state undergraduate tuition and fees at a public Institution of Higher Learning. (A chart listing 2008 - 2009 maximum rates can be found at http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/CH33/Tuition_and_fees.htm)

Monthly housing allowance - paid to the student - equal to the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents and the zip code for the location of the school. (A chart of BAH rates by ZIP code can be found at http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/bah.html). NOTE: Individuals on active duty or who are enrolled exclusively in online training will not receive the housing allowance.

Annual books and supplies stipend - paid to the student - up to $1,000, paid proportionately based on enrollment.

CH 33 Post 9/11 GI BILL - Must have a minimum of 90 days Active Duty after 9-11-2001

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcript from any prior college and/or military training,

CH 30 Montgomery GI BILL - Active duty began after 7-1-85

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcript from any prior college and/or military training, 
    sent directly to Office of Registrar and Records.

CH 32 V.E.A.P. Active Duty from 1-1-77 until 6-30-85.

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcripts from any prior College and/or military training,

CH 34/30 Old GI BILL Active Duty prior to 1-1-77

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Copy of your Marriage Certificate. (If applicable)
  • Copy of your divorce decree, as well as spouse. (If applicable)
  • Copy of your Children/ stepchildren birth certificate.
  • Official transcript from any prior College and/or military training,

CH 35 Dependent spouse/ surviving spouse, son or daughter.

CH 1606 Montgomery GI Bill for Reservists.
