Getting Started

Is Online Learning Right for You?

Successful completion of an online course requires certain skills:

  • Good time management skills
  • Self-discipline to stay on task
  • Technical skills to navigate the Internet
  • Blackboard and Online Student Orientation

You should also be aware of the following:

  • For certain students, online courses can be more time-consuming than on-campus courses
  • Start and end dates for online credit courses are the same as on-campus courses

Things to do:

  1. Enroll in our free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called Are You Ready for Online Learning?
  2. Take the CLC Online Readiness Assessment
  3. Try the Oasis Online Course Readiness Assessment
  4. Review the Online Course Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Technical Requirements:

  • Have at least a dial-up internet connection. A high speed (DSL or cable) broadband connection is recommended.
  • A modern web browser - Internet Explorer 9 (with compatibility mode enabled); Firefox (current version), Apple's Safari, or Google's Chrome are suggested.
  • Javascript and cookies enabled in your web browser -- If you have never changed the options inside of your web browser, these are very likely enabled.
  • An office suite - Microsoft Office suggested, however LibreOffice, Google Docs are also suitable -- and some are even free!
  • A PDF reader - Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader should be installed.
  • A Flash player - Adobe Flash is commonly used in online courses.
  • An active College of Lake County e-mail account
