Protective Services

These courses will prepare you or provide continuing training for a career in protective services. Each 20-hour course meets the training requirements of the Illinois Private Detective, Private Security, and Private Alarm Act.

Courses are offered each semester for Security Officers and Armed Security Officers. Also offered is a 40-hour course designed to prepare students for a position in a police department as a non-sworn, unarmed Community Service Officer (CSO).

Course Prerequisites and Special Notes

Security guards and private investigators in Illinois are required to obtain a PERC card through the IDFPR. See the links below for more information and the PERC application.

Completion of at least one of the basic training courses or possession of a current PERC is required to complete Firearms Training. Students who are IL residents must have a current FOID card for participation in any firearms course.

Current Armed Security Officers may complete their annual weapon re-qualification per Illinois State requirements by attending the last two days of the Security Officer Firearms Training course. Enrollment for this program is by department consent.
