Architecture Careers

In the United States those who want to provide architectural services must be licensed. To become a licensed architect one must earn a professional degree in architecture, complete a period of practical training or internship, and pass all divisions of the ARE (Architect Registration Examination). In most states, continuing education is required to maintain licensure.

Governing Body | NCARB | IDP

National Council of Architectural Regristation Board (NCARB) is something you will eventually become very familiar with. NCARB is the organization thats helps students become licensed architects. They run the program that lets you become licensed.

The Intern Development Program (IDP) identifies the comprehensive experience that is essential for the independent practice of architecture.

The IDP was created jointly in the 1970s by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The IDP is developed and administered by NCARB.

IDP is a way to keep track of experience and formally record internships and jobs that you have worked going towards your license.

It is very important that if you have or have recently had a job with an architect that you register yourself on the website so you can get credit for your work.

American Institute of Architecture | AIA

The AIA is the voice of the architectural profession and the resource for its members in service to society. Individuals who are licensed to practice architecture in the United States are invited to be a part of the leading organization representing the interests of the profession, The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

AIA has a lot of helpful resources for aspiring architect, including a career center, bookstore, continuing education, and a list of AIA chapters.

American Institute of Architecture Students | AIAS

AIAS is the American Institute of Architecture Students and it is similar to AIA but it is specifically designed for students and will be a good resource to further your knowledge and experience.
