Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) Certificate

The 30 hour Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) is intended for:

  • current teachers, native or non-native speakers, who wish to expand their professional opportunities and to enhance their teaching skills by adding a TESOL certificate to their portfolio;
  • individuals interested in pursuing a career as a teacher's aide;
  • for recent college graduates and/or first time teachers interested in teaching English in a non-English speaking country;
  • professionals interested in applying their skills in the field of English language teaching.

What are the requirements?

  1. EDU 221 Introduction to Teaching
    or
    PSY 121 Introduction to Psychology
  2. ENG 127 Introduction to General Linguistics
  3. ENG 128 Linguistics and Society
  4. CMM 127 Intercultural Communication
  5. ENG 261 Methods of Teaching ESL
  6. ENG 262 Theories of Teaching ESL and Bilingual Education
  7. ENG 265 Grammar for English Language Teachers
  8. ENG 267 Phonetics and Phonology for English Language Teachers
  9. ENG 268 Assessment of the English Language Learner
  10. ENG 271 TESOL Practicum

Candidates can register for individual courses provided they have met the requirements of each of the courses.

What jobs are available on completion of the Approval/Certificate?

  • CLC's TESOL can possibly be used to teach in Adult Education ESL programs on a part-time basis. (Full-time employment in Adult Education ESL programs usually requires a Master's degree in TESOL or Applied Linguistics.)
  • This certificate may also be used by recent college graduates and/or first time teachers interested in teaching English in a non-English speaking country or in teaching ESL in a business/workplace environment.
  • Current teachers, native or non-native speakers, may wish to expand their professional opportunities by adding a TESOL certificate to their portfolio.
  • This certificate may assist individuals interested in pursuing a career as a teacher's aide.

What is the cost and when are the courses offered?

Tuition and fees equivalent to 30 credit hours. Courses are offered during Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
