Formats other than a traditional classroom setting
Can I take a math course in a different format other than a traditional classroom setting?
The following alternative formats are offered for students who are self-motivated and capable of studying on their own. Students must be able to learn mathematics through reading materials and looking at examples. These formats are not appropriate for all students, so interested persons should check with the Mathematics Department to see if the desired format is suitable for them.
-
Online mathematics courses: Some math courses are offered online and are denoted with section numbers in the 800s. Please see http://clconline.clcillinois.edu for a complete list of online courses for the current term. Many of the online mathematics courses require proctored exams, so there may be an on campus requirement.
Students should carefully consider if an online math course is right for them before they register. All face-to-face instructional time is replaced with online instructional time. Students who enroll in an online math course must:
- discipline themselves to study independently.
- have at least 10 hours on a weekly basis to read the text, do assignments, participate in online discussions, and study the course material.
- be familiar with computers, the internet, and the CLC e-mail system.
- have regular access to a computer that is connected to the internet.
- be able to work without face-to-face contact with an instructor or a tutor.
-
Hybrid mathematics courses: Some math courses are offered in a hybrid format and are denoted with section numbers in the 600s. Please see http://clconline.clcillinois.edu for a complete list of hybrid courses for the current term. This format involves both face-to-face instructional time and online instructional time.
Students should carefully consider if a hybrid math course is right for them before they register. In mathematics, half of the face-to-face instructional time is replaced with online instructional time. Students who enroll in a hybrid math course must:
- discipline themselves to study independently on material that is not covered in the face-to-face instructional time.
- have at least 10 hours on a weekly basis to attend class, read the text, do assignments, participate in online discussions, and study the course material.
- be familiar with computers, the internet, and the CLC e-mail system.
- have regular access to a computer that is connected to the internet.
- attend class two hours per week.
-
Mathematics Modules - MTH 101 Elementary Concepts of Mathematics: MTH 101 is available in a series of one-credit hour modules. The series of topics covered in the modules is equal in content to the course offered in the classroom format when all modules in the course have been successfully completed. Persons enrolled in the modules attend an orientation session and establish individual schedules with the instructional staff in the Math Center at the Grayslake campus or at the Testing Centers at the Lakeshore or Southlake Campuses. Attendance is required.
Students begin the modules by enrolling in the first module course. Students can enroll in subsequent modules one at a time after completion of the first module with instructor consent. A student can not attempt more than one module at a time. Students are expected to finish at least one module in one semester, but may be able to finish two, three, or all four modules in one semester.
Students should carefully consider if the MTH 101 modules are right for them before they register for the first module. Students who enroll in the modules must:
- discipline themselves to study independently.
- be able to keep two one-hour appointments in the Math Center per week.
- spend extra time outside of appointments doing assignments, studying the material, and taking exams.
- be able to work without face-to-face contact with an instructor.
