Paralegal Internship (PLS 250)

About the Internship

The Paralegal Studies Program Internship is a three credit hour course offered during the Fall and Spring terms.

Eligible students report to an assigned site for a minimum of 120 hours over the course of a 16 week semester in exchange for course credit. The internship has a one hour per week class room component conducted by the Department Chair. The internship is unpaid and the particular schedule for reporting is agreed upon by the individual student and host site at the start of the semester. Most placements require weekday availability, at least one day per week. Most students "work" at their site for about 10 hours per week.

The internship is ideally for those students who are nearly finished with their studies. The more PLS coursework the student has completed, the better chance for success in the internship placement.

Prerequisites

To ensure that students participating in the internship possess a certain level of skill and knowledge, students must have completed, at the very, least the following three courses with a grade of C or better:

Declare Your Major

The internship course is designed to prepare graduating PLS students for the job market. If a student has not declared a PLS major, that student should do so prior to requesting internship placement. Forms for declaring a major are available in the Registrar & Records office.

Prior to Enrolling

Students must contact the Paralegal Studies Department Co-Chair, Gayle Miller, prior to enrollment to receive consent to enroll. Interested students should submit a resume via email attachment to gmiller@clcillinois.edu. Once there has been a placement discussion and agreement, the Department Co-Chair will enter consent to enroll in the course.

Deadlines

Those students who wish to be considered for Internship should contact Gayle Miller:

  • prior to July for the Fall semester.
  • before end of October preceding the Spring semester.
