Funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, TRiO is a program offering success-supporting services to qualifying College of Lake County students in an associate degree or transfer program.

How does the program help students succeed?

If you qualify, TRiO will help you:

  • Set academic goals
  • Develop an academic plan
  • Prepare for transfer
  • Select and plan a career
  • Understand college expectations
  • Master study skills

Services include:

  • Peer mentors
  • Workshops on test-taking strategies, study skills, financial literacy, finding scholarships, completing financial aid applications and various others
  • Field trips, cultural events and visits to four-year colleges
  • Connections to other CLC campus services

Who qualifies?

You are eligible to enroll in TRiO-Student Support Services if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • You are a first-generation college student (neither of your parents has completed a bachelor’s degree).
  • You or your family meets federal guidelines for being low income. (See Federal TRIO Programs Current-Year Low-Income Levels.)
  • You have a documented disability registered with the Office for Students with Disabilities.

All TRiO-Student Support Services applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and currently enrolled (or enrolled in the upcoming semester) at the College of Lake County.

How to apply

  1. Obtain and submit a completed Student Support Services application (PDF) to the TRiO-SSS office. The form is also available from the TRiO office.
  2. Provide proof of your household income. Documents that can be used for proof of income include:
    • Federal/state income tax returns
    • Social Security benefits statement
    • TANF/SNAP
    • VA benefits
    • Worker’s Compensation
    • Proof of child support or unemployment benefits statement
  3. Once your application is reviewed, you will be contacted to schedule an interview with CLC staff members to certify your enrollment into the TRiO-SSS program and assess your individual needs for services.

We are currently accepting applications from CLC students who are currently enrolled. Please complete and submit your application to the TRiO-SSS office.

TRiO-SSS acceptance decisions are made based on ensuring students meet the requirements set by the grant for eligibility for our program (if you have any questions about whether or not you qualify please review our eligibility requirements). Our grant places a limit on how many students we can serve at one time, so if our program is full, we may not be able to accept you right away; if this is the case, we will notify you via email. When we have students graduate and open a space in our program, we will revisit your application and your interest in being part of TRiO-SSS.

The TRiO Student Support Services program is funded to serve 140 students. Applications are accepted on a continual basis.
