The Office for Students with Disabilities offers a wide range of support for students needing accommodations. Common accommodations are time extensions on exams, note takers, digital recorders, assistive technology, sign language interpreters and audio format tests and textbooks. We realize that the effects of a disability may change, which is why our process involves meeting with students each and every semester to renew accommodations and ensure individualized accommodations are made.
Assistive technology is a vital part of higher education for students with disabilities. We maintain comprehensive AT options to meet the varying needs of our students. While technology along with software is not provided for use at home, all three campuses can be outfitted with needed programs for use at any time.
We also reserve assistive equipment at the Grayslake Circulation desk.
All services/accommodations at the College of Lake County are tailored to individual student need. As such, there are many ways to assist a student with varying degrees of hearing loss. Services/Accommodations may offset limitations brought on by tinnitus and/or different types of hearing loss ranging from mild to severe.
A range of accommodations/services may be offered, which include:
Sign language interpreters are available with advanced notice. To have interpreters on the first day of classes, contact the Office for Students with Disabilities to set up an appointment prior to the beginning of the semester. If your schedule changes, notify OSD. If you miss more than three successive classes without notifying OSD, your interpreting services may be suspended and may only be reinstated after a meeting with an OSD staff member.
If you know you will be late for class, notify OSD. Interpreters will wait 15 minutes per each hour of class. If you arrive after your interpreter has left, contact OSD. If the interpreter has not been reassigned, OSD will make attempts to provide you with an interpreter for the remainder of that class.
Other methods of interpreting such as tactile, cued speech, etc. should be discussed with a specialist in OSD prior to the start of a semester.
Various types of technologies are available to provide this service. Please feel free to discuss your individual need with a specialist in OSD.

Ranging from FM units, amplified stethoscopes, and other ALD’s are available. Please feel free to discuss your individual need with a specialist in OSD.
If eligible, a student note taker would be assigned and provide a copy of notes from the class.
Other accommodations may be provided to you on an individual basis, and can be discussed with a specialist within OSD during your INF meeting.
If this is a demonstrated need, note takers may be provided to you. If you prefer, you may remain anonymous to your note taker. Your note taker’s notes will be forwarded to your student email account, unless other arrangements need to be made.
Depending on your disability, you may be eligible for testing accommodations. You should meet with your instructors at the start of the semester to arrange testing accommodations. Options may include taking tests in the classroom or the testing center. However, to take exams in the Testing Center, you must complete a student testing request form, obtain your instructors signature and return it to OSD at least three days prior to exams.

Accessible format documents: If you are blind or have low vision, you may receive handouts in an accessible format, such as Braille, large print or electronic documents. To receive accessible format, please contact OSD in advance to allow reasonable time for conversion.
Alternate format textbooks: Textbooks converted to audio or PDF for enlargement, the OSD has the ability to convert your textbooks so they may be made accessible.
In-class assistants: Although the college does not provide personal assistants, under certain circumstances, a classroom assistant may be appropriate where a student may not be able to demonstrate competency on manual tasks. The decision to use this accommodation is made on a case by case basis.
Scooters: Though not an accommodation, CLC manages a small fleet of scooters. These are available at the main entrance of the Grayslake campus, with one additional scooter located at each of the satellite campuses. Scooters are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and are for student and visitor use only. As such, we unfortunately cannot guarantee a scooter will be available on a constant basis.
Service animals: Defined as dogs, service animals are allowed in all public areas. The handler must be in full control of the dog, and it must be on a leash or harness at all times, be clean, in good health, with current vaccinations. City ordinances require dogs to wear a vaccination tag at all times. Handlers are required to clean up after their dog. If a service animal’s behavior fundamentally alters the college’s programs, activities and services, poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others, or if the animal displays threatening behavior toward others, the college reserves the right to ask that the dog be removed from campus. Service dogs offset the limitations of a disability and perform a task. While service dogs may be allowed on campus, therapy or emotional support/comfort animals may not be. Please consult OSD directly concerning non-service animals prior to bringing them on campus.
