by Public Relations and Marketing | Published Oct 30, 2018

The College of Lake County’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at noon Monday, Nov. 5 in Café Willow on the Grayslake Campus. This year’s event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and it will include the dedication of two new pieces at the college’s outdoor veterans plaza.

Keynote speakers will be David Groeninger, CLC history professor and department chair, who will speak on the ramifications of World War I, and Gary Tillery, the artist who created the sculpture display. Other speakers include: Richard A. Anderson, chair of thePhoto of color guard from Naval Station Great Lakes CLC Board of Trustees and an Army veteran; CLC President Lori Suddick, Ed.D.; Eliseo Lopez of CLC’s Student Veterans Club; and emcee Joe Bochantin, the college’s veteran student services coordinator and an Army veteran.

The new artwork is located in a plaza named “CLC Salute to Veterans.” One 14-foot sculpture, titled “Defenders of Peace,” depicts a dove and stars to celebrate peacemaking efforts. The second piece portrays a crouching soldier gazing at embedded plaques identifying the five branches of the U.S. military. “The plaza is intended to remind us of the debt we owe the men and women who have served in our armed forces—especially those who have sacrificed their lives so we can live in freedom,” said Tillery, a Vietnam veteran and Lake County resident. He also is the artist of the City of Chicago Vietnam Memorial on the Chicago River. The CLC project was created through the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany, located at Fort Sheridan, represented by Kathleen Van Ella of Portraits/Chicago, Inc. Among the studio’s creations are statues of sports stars, including the depiction of basketball great Michael Jordan at the United Center. For details on the studio, visit

This is the sixth Veterans Day event at CLC. The ceremony honors those who have served in the U.S. military. Following the ceremony, veterans are invited to attend a luncheon in Café Willow.
