Art gallery presents Hans Habeger’s ‘Constructs’ Feb. 22 to March 22

The facades of Chicago’s suburban strip malls and big-box stores, representing a culture of consumerism and convenience, are the subjects of “Constructs,” a collection of paintings and drawings on display at the College of Lake County Feb. 22 to March 22. The works, by artist and CLC art Professor Hans Habeger, will be shown at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art, located on CLC’s Grayslake Campus.

The gallery will host a  free reception, open to the public, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

Habeger said he took interest in facades of the big box stores and strip malls after shopping in them and after driving past buildings in Skokie and Northbrook while commuting from his Evanston home to theDrawing of transformer by Hans Habeger Grayslake Campus. “I find these subjects visually appealing due to the architecture, sense of time and place, quality of light, mundaneness and arrangement, repetition and quality of formal design elements,” said Habeger, who has taught drawing courses full time at CLC for 13 years. “Particularly, closed or vacant strip mall storefronts interest me because they symbolize the passage of time, the transitory nature of the landscape, and they elude to our own mortality.”
