June 27: President Suddick and CEO, philanthropist Carol Lavin Bernick discuss leadership and culture change

by Public Relations and Marketing | Published Jun 17, 2019

How can business leaders apply innovation and risk-taking to grow an organization? When coordinating a culture change to build an organization’s effectiveness, what practical things do leaders need to keep in mind?

The two questions are the focus of “The Power of Culture: Leadership, Innovation and Institutional Transformation,” a session from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 27 in the College of Lake County’s James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. CLC President Dr. Lori Suddick, who joined CLC in May 2018, will facilitate a discussion with Chicago-area business leader and philanthropist Carol Lavin Bernick regarding these business topics. The event is free and open to the public.

Bernick is CEO of PolishedPhoto of Carol Lavin Bernick Nickel Capital Management, a privately held company that manages diversified investments. She also has 37 years of executive leadership with Alberto Culver Co., which was a $1.6 billion global manufacturer of consumer products. As president of Alberto Culver North America, Bernick led a nationally-recognized cultural overhaul of the company profiled by the Harvard Business Review. Later, as executive chairman, she initiated and oversaw the sale of Alberto Culver to Unilever in 2011.

Bernick’s civic engagement and involvement in philanthropic organizations includes the Lavin Family Foundation, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, The Friends of Prentice, Tulane University and the Chicago Community Trust, among others. She and her family recently founded Enchanted Backpack, a nonprofit that provides books, school supply essentials, winter clothing and other needed resources to the region’s most underserved elementary and middle schools and community organizations.

The dialogue will allow time for questions from the audience, and a networking reception will follow. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Bernick’s book, “Gather As You Go.”
