College's 50th Anniversary celebration includes more than 50 free events

From a community celebration with fireworks to the opening of a 1999 time capsule, Lake County residents are invited to more than 50 free events sponsored by the College of Lake County to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The year-long effort began with the May 18 commencement ceremony and continues through May 2020.

Special events at the Grayslake, Lakeshore (Waukegan) and Southlake (Vernon Hills) Campuses are a part of a growing list that will top 50 events to appeal to the Lake County community. While the official 50th anniversary is Sept. 25, the celebration is designed to encompass several months to allow the community to experience the diverse offerings of the college.

“Since the fall of 1969, CLC Photo of CLC logohas helped countless residents of Lake County and elsewhere realize their dreams—whether the dream is a first career, a second career, a new skill or a new insight,” said Anne O’Connell, director of public relations and marketing. “The events appeal to diverse interests, and we hope they will help CLC thank the community for our 50-year partnership.”

Events include:

  • Thursday, June 27: The Power of Culture: Leadership, Innovation and Institutional Transformation, 1-3 p.m. in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake Campus. CLC President Dr. Lori Suddick will host this lively discussion with CEO and philanthropist Carol Lavin Bernick on leadership and culture change for maximum effectiveness. To register, visit
  • Monday, July 22-Thursday, July 25: CLC Days, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the Grayslake, Lakeshore (Waukegan) or Southlake (Vernon Hills) Campus. New and returning students can speak with representatives about career and transfer programs,adult basic education, financial aid and testing services. Also apply to CLC and register for fall classes.
  • Thursday, July 25: CLC’s 50 Fest, 6-9 p.m., Grayslake Campus, Technology Building lawn. The community is invited to celebrate CLC’s 50 years with live music, inflatable structures for kids of all ages, games and food trucks. There also will be a car show organized by CLC automotive faculty and a fireworks show at dusk. Bring your own blankets, lawn chairs and a non-perishable food or cash donation to the CLC SHARE pantry. Wear CLC gear from any year to be entered into a raffle, and CLC’s 50th Anniversary merchandise will be for sale.
  • Monday-Thursday, Sept. 23-27: Community Service Projects. The college’s 50th Anniversary Committee and the Student Government Association will organize students, faculty and staff to participate in service projects for nonprofit and community organizations. The Grayslake, Lakeshore and Southlake Campuses will serve as the kickoff locations.    

  • Tuesday, Sept. 24: Living Lab trail opening, 4 p.m., Café Willow on the Grayslake Campus. The footpath follows the existing campus paths and building hallways, with new signs added to explain environmental features such as solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling. Other signs highlight opportunities to explore the 10 dimensions of wellness, personally and through education and career opportunities.        
  • Wednesday, Sept. 25: Time Capsule Opening, 1 p.m., Student Commons, Grayslake Campus. See items included in a 1999 time capsule, and current students along with college trustees will add present-day objects and re-bury the capsule.
  • Friday, Sept. 27: State-of-the-College Address, Student Commons, Grayslake Campus. CLC President Dr. Lori Suddick will address the community, and light breakfast refreshments will be served.
