College celebrates Manufacturing Month in October with six events

With Lake County home to more than 1,000 manufacturers providing one in seven jobs, according to the nonprofit Lake County Partners, the College of Lake County is celebrating Manufacturing Month in October with six events.

Unless otherwise noted, each event will take place at the Grayslake Campus:

  • Engineering Night Thursday, Oct. 3, 5:30-9 p.m., Willow Café. Explore careers in engineering and computer science and meet with representatives from area engineering schools. Mingle with professional engineers to learn about engineeringPhoto of 3D printer in Baxter Innovation Lab careers such as civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical computer science, aerospace and more. CLC engineering professors will explain the engineering college search process. Three, 25-minute breakout sessions cover participating college and university engineering programs, and visitors will be able to tour the Baxter Innovation Lab.   • Manufacturing Day: Thank-You Visits, Friday, Oct. 4. CLC representatives will visit partners in the community to thank them for their partnership, input and support of CLC and manufacturing growth in Lake County. Follow at #CLCMfgMonth.
  • Career Talk: Essential Employability Skills, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 9-10:30 a.m., Room T326. A study conducted by Harvard Business School states that 85 percent of job success is from well-developed employability skills and only 15 percent is from the hard skills developed specifically for the position. Lake County employers from various industries will discuss personal ethic, teamwork, work ethic and communication.
  • Counselors and Advisors Tour Day, Friday, Oct. 18. Representatives from several Lake County high schools will visit CLC and local manufacturing companies to discuss the future for students and the many opportunities available in the manufacturing field.
  • Manufacturing Job Fair, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. to noon and 5:30-7:30 p.m., A Wing First Floor Hallway. Whether you are looking to enter or advance your career, meet representatives from several Lake County, ready-to-hire employers, including MacLean-Fogg Co., Smalley Steel Ring Co. and Dynomax, Inc. Dress professionally and bring copies of your resume.
  • Lakeshore Campus Mechatronics Lab Open House, Friday, Oct. 25, 10 a.m. to noon, Lakeshore (Waukegan) Campus, 1 Genesee St., Third Floor. Manufacturing is a growing field, as 186,000 new manufacturing jobs were created nationwide from January 2017 to January 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Increased automation is prompting manufacturing companies to seek new employees and upgrade the skills of current ones. In response, CLC has added a mechatronics lab to the Lakeshore Campus. Mechatronics combines mechanics, electronics and computer technologies to install or maintain robotics and other “smart” products for industry and the home.

CLC’s Manufacturing Month is an extension of the Oct. 4 Manufacturing Day, which is sponsored by several trade associations, including the National Association of Manufacturers. In addition to Manufacturing Month activities, a 2019 Manufacturing Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is available. To apply, a student must be enrolled in a certificate or degree program in manufacturing engineering technology. Additionally, applicants must have completed a minimum of 15 college credit hours, possess a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and be seeking a career in manufacturing, transportation or engineering technology.
