To celebrate Black History Month, the College of Lake County (CLC) invites the community to participate in a series of events which take place at the Grayslake Campus unless otherwise noted:
Feb. 12: Myths and Facts of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Room C106. The speaker is Ed Smith-Lewis of the United Negro College Fund.
Thursday, Feb. 13:
- Black Love Day, the cultural and spiritual alternative to the commercial Valentine’s Day, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., A Court. Kimberla Lawson Roby (pictured), a New York Times best-selling author of the Rev. Curtis Black series of novels, will explain her path to becoming a published writer.
- Kick-Back Thursday, 2:30-4 p.m., Room C106. Enjoy light refreshments, socialize and have fun playing black-history trivia and other board games.
Monday, Feb. 17: Sweets 4 the Soul, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Street. Enjoy delicious cakes, $5 each, provided by Nothing Bundt Cakes.
Wednesday, Feb. 19: Black Expo, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
Student Street. Mingle with African-American professionals and business owners, including: Dorothy Gautreaus Sisnett, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Vernon Hills; Robert Collins, owner and founder of Youthage Culinary Program, Inc.; and Wygenia Brisco, retired after serving as associate director of clinical research at AbbVie.
Thursday, Feb. 27: Cultural Connect, noon to 1 p.m., Southlake Campus, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. Students from CLC’s Black Student Union mingle with BSU students from Vernon Hills and Libertyville High Schools.
Friday, Feb. 28: Disco Party, 7-11 p.m., Student Commons. Kick up your heels to the best disco sounds of the ‘70s, and enjoy snacks made by CLC’s Culinary Club.
Saturday, Feb. 29: 36th Annual Salute to Gospel Concert, 7 p.m., Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St. in downtown Waukegan. Presented by CLC’s Lakeshore Campus, this year’s event features Bishop Hezekiah Walker, a multi-GRAMMY® Award-winner and newly inducted Gospel Music Hall of Famer. He will perform along with the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, and special guests include the CLC Gospel Choir, directed by Matthew Hunter.
