The College of Lake County Theatre department will present “As You Like It,” one of Shakespeare’s best-known comedies, from Feb. 28 to March 7 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, located on the Grayslake Campus. Show times are: Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. There also will be a high school matinee Friday, March 6 at 10 a.m.
In “As You Like It,” comic twists and turns abound in the mythical Forest of Arden, where a disguised Rosalind seeks refuge after being wrongfully banished by her uncle. Her unfortunate exile is transformed into a charming adventure
when she encounters some of Shakespeare’s most beloved characters—colorful fools, witty rustics and the lovesick Orlando. The story is a topsy-turvy journey into one of the most joyous worlds the Bard ever penned.

The production has live music, fitting for what is one of Shakespeare’s most musical plays, said Craig Rich, chair of CLC’s Theatre department and the play’s director. “In many ways, ‘As You Like It’ is the culmination of Shakespeare's greatest comedies,” he added. “It takes all the elements audiences loved about his comic plays and multiplies them. As a result, there is more love, more action and physical comedy, and more music.
“If a person attending the play doesn’t understand every single word of Shakespeare, that's okay because they will be able to follow the story by what the characters are doing—their actions and reactions; their physicality and gestures; and their rich emotional journey. It is our job, as theatre artists, to tell the story vocally, physically and emotionally.”
The 2019-20 academic year marks 50 years of CLC Theatre, and as part of the celebration, the public is invited to stay for a reception immediately following the March 1 performance.
