Celebrate African American history with virtual Juneteenth event

by Public Relations and Marketing | Published Jun 15, 2020

In honor of the day when all enslaved African Americans were freed after the Civil War, College of Lake County (CLC) is hosting a virtual Juneteenth celebration on June 18 from 2 - 4 p.m. To create awareness and understanding of diversity, multiculturalism and social justice concerns, the college community will come together for a free Facebook Live program that is open to the public.

Graphic of raised black fists with text Freedom Juneteenth “History has been painted through the lens of those in power and we take back that power by celebrating moments like Juneteenth,” said Leila Manthi, a student from Round Lake Beach studying social work with plans of becoming a film director. “Juneteenth is black history and black history is American history. By celebrating with us, you acknowledge the true history of America. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

As a community college committed to equitable high-quality education, cultural enrichment and partnerships to advance the diverse communities it serves, CLC events will evolve due to COVID-19 social distancing. Juneteenth speakers and performers will educate attendees about mental health in the Black community, voter registration and a history of the holiday.

"It is important our mission is not just something merely in writing, but in action,” said Christina Gardner, multicultural retention coordinator. “As an active member of the multicultural community at CLC, it is important we as college employees create an environment for our students to become increasing culturally conscious.”

The Multicultural Student Center, African American Student Success Network and Black Student Union will organize this social event celebrated annually at the college and across the country. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and local community members will inspire you to take action to make Lake County a better place to live, work and play.
