Fast and free COVID-19 saliva testing offered at College of Lake County through SHIELD Illinois

by Public Relations and Marketing | Published May 11, 2021

College of Lake County now offers free COVID-19 testing at the Grayslake Campus on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting May 17, 2021. Testing is conducted in Room 112 at the University Center of Lake County (UCLC), located at 1200 University Center Drive near the Washington Street entrance. CLC is one of the first community college sites in Illinois to extend free testing to anyone beyond the campus community.

The non-invasive saliva COVID-19 test simply requires an individual to deposit a saliva sample into a provided vial at the testing site. Saliva samples are then transported from UCLC to a network of lab partners who will process the sample and return results to the individual who was tested within 24 hours.

This walk-in testing is free and open to the public, regardless of symptoms. You do not need to be a CLC student, faculty or staff member to be tested. Before you arrive, you must register for an account at portal.shieldillinois.com using Agency Code: df5brbrj.

Compared to the commonly used nasal swab test, the saliva-based test is fast, free of supply chain bottlenecks and cost-effective, because saliva tests do not require nasal swabs. Compared to other saliva tests, this saliva test skips RNA isolation, which allows for quicker results. To date, results of SHIELD Illinois studies show the saliva-based test provides results that are comparable to other COVID-19 viral test methods.
