Alumni art showcased in virtual gallery

by Public Relations and Marketing | Published Jul 01, 2021

For the first time, College of Lake County (CLC) is sharing the artwork of its alumni, and because of the pandemic, in a virtual way.

At the Alumni Art Showcase, which runs from June 28 to July 9, images of art created by numerous CLC alumni are being shown in an online gallery. The showcase is a partnership between the CLC Foundation and CLC’s Robert T. Wright Gallery of Art, which is displaying the art on the CLC website. Both 2D and 3D mediums are shown with several pieces listed for sale.

The idea for an alumni art show came during a discussion between the alumni relations committee as a way to bring the college’s artist alumni together and back to campus.

“The CLC Alumni Art Showcase features alumni artists from across our vast network so we can foster that feeling of community and inspire our graduates to continue their involvement with the college,” said Cotugno, who is a CLC alum herself.

“This exhibit is a smart way to enjoy art during a time when we are all socially distanced,” said Joan Hammel, a CLC alum who is a singer/songwriter. “You can be anywhere to enjoy it. I love how it brings alumni together in a new way, and perhaps in the future they will be able to have the gallery exhibitions online as well so folks who cannot make it in person can still see it.”

Having the work online didn’t hurt reception from the public either, as social media engagement has been high on alumni relations pages.

Davis said as with any new event, there was worry about not getting any participation from alumni artists, but 19 enthusiastically submitted multiple pieces of their art.

“I would be thrilled if this became an annual event,” Davis said. “The hope would be to add a reception to go along with it to showcase art and reconnect with alumni in person as well as online.”
