Women actors aged 18 and older are invited to audition for the College of Lake County (CLC) Theatre Department’s production of “Desdemona.” Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 and Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Studio Theatre located at 19351 W. Washington St. in Grayslake.
As the wrongly accused and suffering wife of Shakespeare’s tragic Moor, Othello, Desdemona has long been viewed as the “victim of circumstance.” But as Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel demonstrates in her comic deconstruction of Shakespeare’s play—aligning tongue-in-cheek humor while raising serious questions as to the role of women through the ages—Desdemona was far from the quivering naïf we’ve all come to know.
Those auditioning need to prepare a 90-second to two-minute memorized monologue from any serio-comic language-rich contemporary play, such as works by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Laura Gunderson, Tom Stoppard and Paula Vogel. Actors need only attend one day of auditions and should bring an acting resumé if they have one. Actors should be available for the call-backs on Thursday, Dec. 8, 6:30-10 p.m.
Rehearsals will begin the week of Jan. 17, 2023, and are Monday-Thursday evenings with possible weekend rehearsals, based on cast availability, until tech week. Performances are Feb. 24-26 and March 3-5, 2023. Actors should have these dates free before auditioning.
