College of Lake County (CLC) students take the reins and lead the production during “The Squirrels” by Roberts Askins, this spring’s “Play On! A CLC Theatre Student Showcase.”

Actors performing in "The Squirrels"“Our annual student showcase is a highlight of our CLC Theatre season,” said Theatre Department Chair Craig Rich. “Each year, the play is chosen, directed, designed and acted by our students. The production showcases the impressive talent of our students and gives them the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom to a fully realized production. It’s an exciting process and we are so proud of what they’ve created.”

Performances will take place at the Studio Theatre at the college's Grayslake Campus. Show times are:

  • Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m.

In this fast-paced and witty dark comedy, the patriarch of a family of gray squirrels has collected enough nuts to last ten winters. When a group of starving fox squirrels begs him to share his hoard of food, animosity erupts into a ferocious war. “The Squirrels” is a boundary-pushing, satirical look at wealth inequality in which no creature comes out unscathed.

Student Director Octavio Hernandez said, “I’ve really enjoyed my first time directing, from doing the prep work to working with my actors. I was fortunate enough to serve as assistant director for last summer's production and the two fall productions this past year, which has really helped grow my confidence going into ‘The Squirrels.’ I'm putting a lot of work into this production, and we had to overcome some hurdles, but I've enjoyed every single bit of it. The theatre department helped me find a new passion and I can't express how grateful I am.”

The production contains some adult language and themes that may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $8 for CLC staff and students, teenagers and seniors. Tickets are buy one, get one free on Friday nights, April 7 and 14.
