About

Since 1988, thousands of students have celebrated Rube’s legacy by creating Rube Goldberg Machines™ in our annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest® and they’ve learned – and laughed – a lot. On a formal basis, this learning experience now falls under the category of STEM / STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Math) education – something which came naturally to Rube who was trained as an engineer but was an inventor and artist at heart. Join all of the teachers, hosts, students, administrators, sponsors, parents and grandparents – and Rube fanatics! – who participate in the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest!

The competitions encourage teamwork and out-of-the-box problem solving, in a fresh learning environment and level playing field. Remember, to compete in a RGMC all you need is a good imagination and a pile of junk!”

Rube Goldberg Machine

What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?

A Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM) is a crazy contraption which accomplishes a simple task in the most complicated – and funniest – way possible! Based on the “Invention” cartoons of the famous Pulitzer Prize-winning American cartoonist, Rube Goldberg, actual machines are at the heart of the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. They use everyday items (mostly junk!), they tell a story and, most important of all – they make you LAUGH.

The 2020 CLC Rube Goldberg Challenge

The College of Lake County Engineering Transfer Department is hosting a Rube Goldberg Challenge, to be held during the Maker Faire Lake County on April 25, 2020.  This year's challenge is "Inflate a Balloon and Pop It!". This was the Rube Goldberg Contest in 2012.  Check out images and videos of the 2012 contest as a source for inspiration! Note that the CLC Challenge is not part of the larger Rube Goldberg Competition, but a stand-alone event. Trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place participants.
