College of Lake County’s (CLC) celebration of gospel music hits a new milestone this year during the 40th annual Salute to Gospel Music at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at Jesus Name Apostolic Church in Waukegan. This premier Black gospel experience is the capstone Black History Month event, bringing people together to honor the community.
This year’s event is headlined by Vincent Bohanan. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Bohanan is a distinguished gospel singer, songwriter and pastor. He discovered his passion for music early, beginning to play the organ at age 11 without formal lessons. He honed his skills and pursued a bachelor’s degree in music business at Five Towns College, graduating in 2013. He is currently enrolled in Virginia Union University for seminary.
In January 2014, Bohanan founded the Sound of Victory in Brooklyn and The Victorious Army - ATL, providing a platform for young singers to develop and express their musical talents positively. In addition to his musical endeavors, Bohanan is the pastor of The Winners’ Assembly NYC, a ministry he leads with a focus on fostering multi-ethnic fellowship and encouraging the expression of natural talents and spiritual gifts.
The event will also have additional performances by Zacardi Cortez, the CLC Gospel Choir and the Community Praise Team. The community choir is made up multiple voices from across Lake County, directed by Senior Pastor Tiffany Peppers, Jesus Name Apostolic Church; Mark Cosey, former CLC gospel choir director; and Co-Senior Pastor Cory Ratliff, The Sign of the Dove Church, Waukegan.
“We are thrilled to bring the community together to celebrate the last 40 years of gospel music with a medley of songs from 1984 through 2024,” Peppers said. “This unforgettable evening will uplift your spirit, fill your heart with joy and remind us of the power of faith and unity through song."
Beverly Phelps, retired CLC African American Student Outreach and Programs Coordinator, will be honored with the 2024 Harambee Award of Excellence for Community and Spiritual Engagement.
The annual event began in 1986 as a performance opportunity to support the college’s Gospel Choir and has since evolved to be one of the most popular music programs put on by CLC. Over the years it has attracted some of the gospel music industry’s best including The Winans, Shirley Caesar and Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Choir.
