Panama: Chiriquí Archaeological Project

Update: Applications are closed. Late applications will be accepted based on availability.

June 13 – July 3, 2023

This program trains undergraduate students in archaeological field and laboratory methods through their participation in an ongoing research project. Completion of this training from an accredited school is required for the vast majority of entry-level job positions in anthropology. In the field, students will learn how to make conduct archaeological survey, record sites, make accurate plan maps, lay out excavation units, excavate scientifically, and maintain appropriate documentation. In the laboratory, students will learn how to curate, classify and catalogue archaeological artifacts, and prepare formal research reports.

During the course of the program, brief evening lectures will introduce students to important themes and debates in the archaeology of southern Central America. By virtue of being located in Panama, students will be also exposed to Latin American culture on a daily basis.

Excursions include a whale watching tour (Boca Chica), a coral reef snorkeling tour (Boca Chica), a trip to the archaeological sites in nearby highlands (Cerro Punta and Boquete).

  • ANT 240: Field Methods in Anthropology (4 credits)

This course is suitable for those who have not taken a field archaeology course previously. This class will examine how archaeologists examine the organization of human societies, and explore the value of long-term perspectives concerning social changes and continuities. We will explore how archaeologists connect data to the rigorous evaluations of ideas which form the basis of empirical research, and we will analyze the material remains of a pre-Columbian society to evaluate some of these ideas and questions for ourselves. The course will be concerned with the recovery of appropriate types of field evidence used to answer the project’s research questions. Evening lectures and discussion will introduce students to the archaeological literature and debates of the region. This course offers a minimum of 94 hours of direct instruction for each student.
